Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, 1968
Description
This portrait of the renowned Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention encapsulates artist Art Kane’s ability to create engaging and powerful portraits. Though the Mothers of Invention were often characterized as tough, Hell's Angels-type personalities, Kane wanted to introduce viewers to the softer side of the band. Since most of them were fathers, Kane chose to portray the band as one large family, with a tight composition to emphasize the comical contrast between the bearded, edgy rockers and their babies. Captivated by the music of his generation, Art Kane found fame photographing legendary jazz musicians and rock and roll superstars including Louis Armstrong, Joe Lewis, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, the Doors and many others.
