Intermittent Fountains of Golden Light, 2008

Description
South African painter Natasha Kissell's (b. 1978) work plays with pictorial conventions and art historical images embedded in our collective consciousness. Turning these conventions on their heads, she humorously sneaks in paraphernalia from modern life, like the concrete structure in Intermittent Fountains of Golden Light, to comment on our expectations of Romantic imagery and its use in contemporary culture. Kissell’s paintings propose a more flexible understanding of time, closely associated with the contemplation of nature. Contrasting with her perfectly mastered painterly technique, Kissell leaves her stories open to interpretation.
